The Importance Of Mindfulness For Kids

We practice mindfulness daily. Mindfulness: the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something. A mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.

I believe mindfulness is a great skill for kids to learn. It’s necessary for everyday living.

The importance of mindfulness for kids:

  1. Teaches to calm their bodies + minds

  2. Teaches them to create a relaxed, positive environment, anywhere

  3. Teaches self-control

  4. Teaches patience

  5. Teaches gratitude

  6. Teaches to notice their emotions + shift to more neutral thinking

  7. Teaches them to tackle challenges

  8. Improves concentration + mental clarity

  9. Enhances self-love

  10. Enhances better sleep

How we practice mindfulness in our home:

  1. Focus on our breathing

  2. Slow down, pause + take a minute

  3. Listen to the sounds around us

  4. Take a 10 minute walk or bike ride

  5. Practice yoga + stretching each morning

  6. Find joy in small things around us

  7. Bake or cook as a family + sit to enjoy our meal together

  8. Painting + coloring

  9. Listen to our favorite music + think about how it makes us feel

  10. Reflect on what is most important to us
