Homeschool Friendly Attractions

My list of homeschool friendly attractions and activities:

Space and science centers

  1. NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center STEM. This is more-so for older kids(middle and high school) to be hands on/ to provide experiential learning opportunities and STEM challenges to inspire, engage and educate learners in NASA unique science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

  2. The Maryland Science Center. They offer homeschool, hands-on STEM workshops, enrichment programs, IMAX films, planetarium programs, and more.

  3. Robinson Nature Center. They have indoor and outdoor nature events, that you can incorporate into your nature/science lesson.

Museums

  1. The Visionary Art Museum. This super cool national museum exhibits art made by self-taught intuitive artists.

  2. Benjamin Banneker Museum and Historical Park. They offer history workshops, general exhibit tours, and storytellers.

  3. KID Museum Bethesda Metro Center. Their state-of-the-art maker-space is uniquely designed to spark curiosity and cultivate the “mind of a maker.” Explore coding, robotics, engineering design, and hands-on maker learning.

  4. National Air and Space. Explore all things air and space with exhibits, story-time, discovery stations, science demonstrations and events.

  5. National Museum of Natural History. Appropriate for all ages, they have a cool interactive area that enlightens visitors on the topics of fossil dating, fossilization and evolution. A butterfly pavilion, tarantula feedings and other cool stuff.

  6. National Postal Museum. Hands-on activities are always fun. Kids can create a stamp using their own design, write and mail a postcard, sit in the cab of a postal truck, ride in a stagecoach and also sort packages as if you worked in a mail room.

  7. International Spy Museum. Spy-related intrigue and interactive experiences.

Zoo’s, farms and gardens

  1. The Maryland Zoo

  2. Smithsonian’s National Zoo

  3. National Colonial Farm

  4. United States Botanic Garden. A cool living plant museum, where your kid learn about the importance and fundamental value and diversity of plants, as well as their aesthetic, cultural, economic, therapeutic and ecological significance. They offer a variety of exhibits, tours, and programs for visitors of all ages.

Discovery Centers

  1. Port Discovery. We love it there! Port Discovery is designed to be engaging, inspiring, educational and fun for children from birth to age 10. They offer homeschool days and special events, like, sensory-friendly experiences and human beatboxing guests to put on a show for the kids.

Classes with instruction

  1. Kids First Swim School. They offer swimming lessons to everyone, from infants to adults.

  2. My Gym. We love My Gym! The offer hour long classes(ballet, gymnastics, ninja, gym) that will keep your kid busy.

  3. School of Rock. Music/instrument lessons for kids.
